Historical and Mythological Significance

Ram Navami 2025: The Divine Celebration of Lord Rama’s BirthAs mentioned in Ramayana, Rama was born to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya in the city of Ayodhya. Despite having three wives—Kausalya, Kaikeyi, and Sumitra—Dasharatha remained childless for many years. Eager to have an heir, he performed a sacred ritual under the guidance of the sage Rishyasringa. Upon the completion of the ritual, a divine figure emerged from the sacrificial fire, carrying a pot filled with celestial rice and milk. Following the sage’s instructions, the king distributed the pot contents among his wives.

As a result, Kausalya gave birth to Rama on the ninth day of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the lunar month of Chaitra (March–April), a day celebrated as Ram Navami. Kaikeyi gave birth to Bharata, while Sumitra bore twin sons, Lakshmana and Shatrughna. Thus, King Dasharatha’s long-cherished wish for sons was finally fulfilled.

Why do we celebrate Ram Navami?

Ram Navami, the celebration of his birth, signifies the victory of good over evil and reinforces the eternal truth that dharma always prevails. As narrated in Sage Valmiki’s Ramayana, Rama’s journey unfolds from being a noble prince to an exiled warrior who ultimately defeats the demon king Ravana, restoring justice and righteousness. The day begins with devotees offering Jal (water) to Surya Dev (the Sun God) at sunrise, as he is considered an ancestor of Lord Rama in Hindu mythology.

The festival also serves to bring positive energy into people's lives and dispel negativity from the world. Recitations of Rama Katha and the Shrimad Bhagavatam are performed, allowing devotees to reflect on the spiritual significance of this auspicious occasion.
