Margazhi is also known as Agrahayana or Margashirsha, is the ninth month of the traditional Hindu Calendar, typically spanning from mid - December to mid-January in the gregorian calendar. This month is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is considered highly auspicious, as the divine energies are believed to reach their peak during this time. Why is Margazhi celebrated as special?
Margazhi is regarded as a highly special and auspicious month due to its profound historical and spiritual significance. In the Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 10), Lord Krishna reveals his divine manifestations to Prince Arjuna and declares Margashirsha (Margazhi) as his favorite month. He emphasizes this by saying, “I am Margazhi among months,” highlighting the importance of this period for those who offer prayers and think of him. Devotees believe that worship during Margazhi brings Lord Krishna’s special grace and blessings.
Additionally, Margazhi serves as a bridge between Vaishnavites and Saivites. This is because Aarudra or Tiruvaadhirai, Lord Shiva's sacred star, falls on the full moon day after Vaikunta Ekadashi during Margazhi. This day is considered particularly auspicious by devotees of Lord Shiva. Bhajans, Prayers, and Rituals
In Tamil Nadu, the early mornings of Margazhi are vibrant with devotional music. Bhajans and traditional hymns fill the air, sung in praise of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Devotees wake up before dawn to perform these prayers, a practice that is believed to bring immense spiritual benefits.
The famous Thiruppavai, a set of 30 hymns written by the saint-poet Andal, is recited daily during Margazhi by devotees of Lord Vishnu. Observed nine days before Thiruvadhirai, virgin women bathe in water bodies and worship at Shiva temples while singing Thiruvembavai hymns. They witness Lord Nataraja's special worship and consume only one meal.

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this fast on Thiruvadhirai day involves special prayers and Arudhra Darshan. Devotees consume one meal and perform parayanam the next day.
