Karadaiyan Nombu, also known as Savitri Nombu Vratham, is a revered festival observed predominantly by South Indian women.  Karadaiyan Nombu is observed during the transition between the Tamil months of Maasi and Panguni. This vratam begins on the night of the last day of Maasi and concludes on the morning of the first day of Panguni. It is also known as Kamakshi Nombu and Gowri Nombu. The origins of Karadaiyan Nombu trace back to the timeless epic, the Mahabharata. The festival commemorates the devotion of Savitri, a princess who defied destiny to save her husband, Satyavan, from the clutches of death. 

According to the story, a prophecy had predicted that Satyavan would have a short life. However, deeply in love, Savitri chose to marry him despite knowing this. When the time came for Satyavan to pass away, Yama, the god of death, arrived to take his soul. But Savitri, with her wisdom and devotion, engaged Yama in a deep conversation. Impressed by her dedication and intelligence, Yama granted her several wishes—one of which brought Satyavan back to life. 

This festival honors a wife's strength, love, and devotion. Women observe Karadaiyan Nombu to pray for their husband's long life, well-being, and a lasting marriage, inspired by Savitri’s unwavering commitment. 

 Who Celebrates Karadaiyan Nombu? 

Karadaiyan Nombu is primarily observed by married women across Tamil Nadu and parts of South India. However, unmarried women and young girls also partake in the rituals, praying to find an ideal life partner in the future. This festival is a cherished moment of bonding among generations, as mothers pass down the customs and traditions to their daughters. 

Rituals and Celebrations

“Urugadha Venneyum Oradiyum Naan Tharuven, Orukaalum En Kanavar Ennai Vittu Piriyadirukkanum.” 

(This translates to: “I offer butter and Adai to the Goddess, may my husband be blessed with a long and healthy life, never to be separated from me.”)
