Aadi Perukku 2024 Date and Timing: Aadi perukku falls on 3rd August 2024, saturday  starts from Sunrise 06:01 am to sunset 07:05 pm

The month of Aadi is considered auspicious for the Goddess Amman, and among the various festivals celebrated during this time, Aadi Perukku holds significant importance. Aadi perukku falls on 18th day of the Tamil month Aadi (mid-July to mid-August), this festival is a beautiful blend of nature worship, religious rituals, and community celebrations.

Why do we Celebrate Aadi Perukku?

According to legend, the River Ganges once sought Lord Krishna's advice on how to purify herself from the sins absorbed from people bathing in her waters. Lord Krishna advised that she could merge with the Kaveri River to purify herself.

Upon receiving the power from Lord Krishna to absolve sins, the Kaveri River was overjoyed and surged to visit the holy sites where Lord Vishnu resides along her banks. She visited significant locations such as Srirangapatna, Shivanasamudra, and Srirangam to pay homage to Lord Ranganatha.

This event is celebrated as the Aadi Perukku festival. Additionally, during the month of Aadi, the southwest monsoon strengthens, causing the Kaveri River to swell with fresh floodwaters. This increase in water flow is also commemorated as Aadi Perukku.

Significance of Aadi perukku

Aadi perukku is also known as Pathinettam Aadi. In Ancient Tamil literature, including Silappadikaram, highlights the significance of Aadi 18.  The sun transits through the zodiac sign Cancer, impacting agricultural activities. The monsoon rains rejuvenate the land, filling reservoirs and rivers, and ensuring a good supply of water for irrigation. This is crucial for the farmers, who prepare their fields for the next crop cycle. The festival is thus a prayer for a bountiful harvest and prosperity. Lord Ranganatha from the Srirangam Temple visits Amma Mandapam Bathing Ghats, offering items such as sarees, earrings, black beads, marriage threads, betel leaves, areca nuts, and fruits to the Kaveri River. This tradition continues with great devotion.
