Vaikunta Ekadasi 2025: Significance, Celebrations, and Rituals

Ekadashi is a day dedicated to the reverence of Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe. Among all the Ekadashis, the one that falls in the Margazhi month (Tamil month) is considered the most significant and auspicious for Lord Vishnu and his devotees. This sacred day occurs during the waxing phase of the moon in the Margazhi month, making it especially important for spiritual practices and devotion.

Date and Time of Vaikunta Ekadasi

Vaikunta Ekadasi will be observed on January 10th, 2025.

According to the Vakya Panchangam, Ekadasi begins at 12:10 PM on January 9th and concludes at 10:10 AM on January 10th.

The Glory of Vaikunta Ekadasi

Vaikunta Ekadasi falls on the 11th day (Ekadasi) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Margazhi (December-January). On this day, the Vaikunta Dwaram is traditionally opened early in the morning at Vishnu temples. Observing a fast on this sacred day is believed to cleanse the sins accumulated over seven lifetimes. Additionally, anyone who has committed sins or faced hardships and passed away will attain moksha (liberation) and be freed from the cycle of rebirth, provided they observe the fast on this auspicious day. The day is also known as "Mukkoti Ekadasi" in some regions, referring to the belief that three crore (thirty million) deities descend to witness and bless the devotees.

Significance of Vaikunta Ekadasi

On this sacred day, fasting is believed to purify the sins accumulated over seven lifetimes. By observing the fast on Vaikunta Ekadashi, devotees receive the divine blessings of Lord Maha Vishnu. Additionally, the grace of Goddess Lakshmi, who resides on Lord Vishnu’s chest, is automatically bestowed, bringing prosperity and abundance into one's life. Furthermore, the nine treasures (Navaratnas) of Kubera are said to be acquired, ensuring happiness and wealth for the family.

The Legend Behind Vaikunta Ekadasi

According to ancient scriptures, the opening of the Vaikunta Dwaram on Vaikunta Ekadasi is attributed to the request of two demons, Madhu and Kaitabha. These demons once stole the Vedas from Lord Brahma, causing immense turmoil in the heavens. After Lord Vishnu defeated them and retrieved the Vedas, Madhu and Kaitabha, humbled by their defeat, sought to serve as the guardians of Vaikunta. They also requested a divine blessing: that anyone who entered through the Northern Gate of Vaikunta on this auspicious day would attain moksha. Vishnu granted their wish, making the opening of the Vaikunta Dwaram on Vaikunta Ekadasi a significant and sacred event.

Rituals and Practices

Fasting: Devotees observe a strict fast, refraining from consuming rice, grains, or tamasic food. Some opt for a complete fast, while others consume fruits and milk.

Jagaran (Night Vigil): Chanting Lord Vishnu's names and singing devotional hymns throughout the night is considered highly auspicious.

Special Prayers and Puja: Vishnu temples conduct elaborate rituals, including the recitation of Vishnu Sahasranamam and Azhwar Divya Prabandham, along with grand festivals like Irappattu. Devotees also worship Andal on the auspicious Koodarai Valli occasion, believed to bring blessings and auspicious events for the family.

Srirangam Temple Ritual: The highlight of Vaikunta Ekadasi is the opening of the Paramapada Vasal (gateway to heaven) at the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu. Devotees walk through this sacred gate, symbolizing their entry into Vaikunta.

Celebrations Across India

  • Tamil Nadu: The Srirangam temple is the epicenter of celebrations, with lakhs of devotees visiting to pass through the Paramapada Vasal.
  • Andhra Pradesh and Telangana: Temples like Tirupati's Sri Venkateswara Temple see grand festivities and special darshans.
  • Karnataka: The famous Sri Krishna Matha in Udupi observes Vaikunta Ekadasi with unique rituals and offerings.
