Beyond its simple words, Kanda Shasti Kavasam transforms the devotee's journey in search of God's grace.
Origin of Kanda Shasti Kavasam
Kanda Shasti Kavasam, also known as Skanda Shasti Kavacham (Tamil: கந்த சஷ்டி கவசம்), is a revered Hindu devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Murugan, the son of Shiva. This powerful song was composed in Tamil by Devaraya Swamigal, who lived around 1820 and was a disciple of Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai. The hymn was created in the 19th century in Chennimalai, near Erode, Tamil Nadu.
The composition took place at the Chennimalai Subramania Swamy Temple, where Devaraya Swami is said to have first staged the hymn. Notably, the phrase "Chiragiri Velavan" within the hymn refers to the lord of Chennimalai, further emphasizing its deep spiritual significance and connection to the local deity.
Significance of Kanda Shasti Kavasam
Shasti is the day that commemorates Lord Murugan's victory over the asura Surapadman. Distressed by the demon's malevolent actions, the devas sought assistance from Lord Murugan, the younger son of Shiva and Parvati. For six days, he battled Surapadman, ultimately defeating him by cleaving the asura in two. One half transformed into a peacock, which became Lord Murugan's vahana (vehicle), while the other half became a rooster, symbolizing his banner.
Following this triumph, the devas rejoiced, honoring Murugan with prayers and celebrations over the next six days. During this sacred period, devotees often recite the Kanda Shasti Kavacham, a powerful hymn believed to invoke Lord Murugan's blessings.
This hymn invites a Lord Murugan, celebrating his arrival and deep bond with the devotee. It begins by invoking the Murugan’s presence through mantras, describing his appearance, sounds, and swift rescue of the devotee. The devotee surrenders fully, seeking protection for their body, safety from demons, animals, diseases, and freedom from the cycle of birth and death. It includes prayers for harmony, praises Murugan’s names and deeds, worships goddess Saraswati, and emphasizes the Sacred Ash’s power. The hymn concludes by detailing the song’s effects on the devotee and negative forces, ending in total devotion to the Lord Murugan.
Those who participate in fasting during these six days are thought to receive special grace from the deity. For those unable to undertake a complete fast, it is acceptable to eat once or twice daily, depending on personal health and circumstances.
Many devotees believe that during the Kanda Shasti Viratham, regular recitation of the Kanda Shasti Kavacham can help alleviate life's difficulties. Additionally, chanting the full hymn twice a day is believed to bring wealth and prosperity into one’s life.
