Aadi Amavasya is a special festival celebrated in South India by Tamil community people. It usually falls in the month of July or August i.e. the Tamil month of Aadi. This year Amavasya falls twice in the Tamil month of Aadi.

Significance of Aadi Amavasya worship

Aadi Amavasya is a special thithi on which the spirits of our ancestors visit the family members. It is an important day to express gratitude, seek forgiveness, and ask for blessings from our departed family members.

On the day of Aadi Amavasya, It is very auspicious and sacred to perform ancestral rituals and seek their blessings. By performing these rituals, it is believed that they can receive blessings and protection from their ancestors, hence ensuring the well-being and prosperity of their families.

Rituals and Observances on the Aadi Amavasya Day:

Darpanam is a ritual where the families gather near a sacred water body or at home and offers prayers and other offerings to honour the ancestors or departed family members. Rice balls along with sesame seeds are offered and prayers and mantras are chanted to seek blessings.

Homam is a special fire ritual that is done by burning herbal twigs and dried herbs. Other offerings like puffed rice, ghee, and cotton clothes are offered to the fire by chanting various mantras. This process is believed to remove negative energy and purify the atmosphere and please the ancestors.
Visiting temples dedicated to different deities is considered a sacred thing on the day of Aadi Amavasya. Special poojas and abhisheka are performed to the deities to seek the blessing and for the well-being of the souls of the departed ancestors

Charity and donation are one of the best ways to remove the sins that are committed by us and our ancestors, knowingly or unknowingly. Donating food, clothing and necessary things for those who are in need of it is considered very special on the day of Aadi Amavasya
Especially the donation of food -Annadhanam is a very powerful ritual that can be taken to reduce the sins that are performed in life knowingly or unknowingly.
